Legacy Cities Community of Practice

The Legacy Cities Community of Practice is an 18-month hybrid remote and in-person program that brings together interdisciplinary teams from four cities to gain a deeper understanding of a local issue or implement a solution through a place-based project in a disinvested neighborhood. The projects should focus on a land-use issue like greening, housing, transportation connections, placemaking, etc. The program will focus on equity, greening, network building, data and metrics.

Through a combination of topical workshops led by expert faculty, team check-ins, and team presentations to the full cohort, each City Team is expected to commit to at least five hours a month in the program, not including the time spent independently needed to prepare and implement each project. Teams will also have the opportunity to hire a part-time local project coordinator to staff their projects for the final year of the program.  If selected to participate in the program, each City Team will have the opportunity to join a growing network of legacy city community and government leaders working to create an equitable revitalization.

The following questions are meant to provide an understanding of the community you wish to serve and the project you want to develop. If at any point you need assistance completing the application, please feel free to contact Libertad Figuereo, Policy Analyst and Program Lead for the Legacy Cities Community of Practice at Lfiguereo@lincolninst.edu.

C. City Teams formation

We believe it is important when creating change that members of communities under focus lead the conversation. We encourage City Teams to comprise a coalition of city staff and community and civic leaders who are poised to work together on a policy issue, along with leaders who are powerful enough to make things happen within their cities, but able to focus on this project for a few hours a month.

Each team should include:

• at least one leader from nonprofit community-based organization in your selected neighborhood; and

• at least one person from within city government (likely someone from the mayor’s office or a head of a department such as planning, economic development, housing, or community development).

Other team members could include:

• a leader from the county or another governmental entity;

• a leader from a local or regional community foundation or CDFI; or

• a leader of a local institution such as a hospital or university.

Please list the team members you wish to invite to join your City Team and each of the organizations/agencies they belong to. You are responsible for confirming the participation of your team members by the end of the Readiness Phase in December 2022.
